6th Annual STEAM Bowl
Wednesday, May 10, 2016,
marked the 6th annual Leon County Schools STEAM Bowl Challenge, this
year sponsored by Envision Credit Union. STEAM stands for the integration of
science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics
education. Twenty-three elementary school teams participated in the day’s
activities. The engineering task required teams to collaboratively design,
“purchase” materials within a budget, and build a spacious shelter that could
stand up to strong winds, water, and sun…all to emulate the hurricane that the
Tallahassee area experienced last fall. “This is way super cool,”
exclaimed one budding engineer. Many students claimed that working as a team,
building a structure that met all the requirements, and ensuring the building
had a low cost were the greatest challenges of the engineering task.
Additionally, each team completed a STEAM test, with the four top-scoring teams
competing head-to-head in a Jeopardy-style showdown.
Congratulations to the
following schools for placing in the STEAM competition.
